Miracle at Augusta by Steve de Jong provides a rare and unorthodox insight into the privileged and elitist world of golf. Written through the eyes of Travis McKinley, a retired golfer with a sarcastic humour who is currently battling a mid-life crisis, the book follows his attempts at redemption and his transformation from an arrogant, superior man to a caring father figure for teenager Jerzy Slolarski.
Jerzy moved to America from Eastern Europe, and unsurprisingly his accent, acne and size mean he is constantly feeling the blows of his classmates who are taking advantage of this unaware and defenceless boy.
Travis and Jerzy form an unusual relationship and although, as with any relationship, they often argue they eventually grow a strong bond, which culminates with them sharing a round of golf at America’s most famous course, Augusta. However, the round at Augusta is a tiny part of the huge journey they have undertaken to get there and the most enthralling and morally enlightening part of the book is the immense variety of activities that this one objective creates.
The book is perfect for people who need a fun, non-serious introduction into the relatively unknown world of golf and the short nature of the book means that readers are always excited about what the next page might bring. This is an uplifting story that will make you smile and I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a fun, unusual book that will warm and inspire them.
