Bounce by Michael Syed
Recommended by Eddie Kembery
Michael Syed is a twice Olympic table tennis champion, writer and
journalist. Bounce is his first book on the psychology of success,
shortlisted for, among others, the William Hill Sports Book of the Year-
his second book, Black Box Thinking, also attained critical praise.
Simply
put, Bounce aims to capture the margin between champions and their
competitors. What decides child prodigies, in any field - sprinters,
violinists, or table tennis pros. An essential book for any Pauline
hoping to achieve high levels of success in any field at all, it is
encouraging to both the talented and non-talented similarly,
deconstructing how we view practice, talent, progression and
competition, conclusively moving through every major area of success
psychology (placebos, religion, power of purpose and many, many others)
whilst still remaining incredibly dense.
It explains,
among others how Muhammad Ali’s faith in a wheel shaped spaceship and
the religious teachings of a door-to-door salesman led him to greatness;
how trying too hard can be disastrous and how, for the cricketer Jack
Russell, wearing a blue hat can raise performance past anything you ever
expected. Concise and relevant with embellishments of Syed’s own
successful career, Bounce is a must read for anyone pushing for success.
'A fascinating subject and Syed is a dazzling writer.' Owen Slot (Times)
'I love this book. a must-read if you have ever wondered what sets the super-achievers and the rest of us apart – in any field, not just in sport. I only wish I had read it when I was fifteen.' Gabby Logan, BBC presenter and former international gymnast
'Intellectually stimulating and hugely enjoyable at a stroke … challenged some of my most cherished beliefs about life and success.' Jonathan Edwards, triple jump world record holder
'Cutting-edge analysis and devastatingly argued.' Mark Thomas, professor of evolutionary genetics at University College London
'Compelling and, at times, exhilarating – Bounce explains high achievement in sport, business and beyond.' Michael Sherwood, chief executive, Goldman Sachs International
