English Society
Orlando Strachan
Friends, Paulines, countrymen, lend me your ears. You may or may not be aware of the prestigious English Society. A gathering of only the most esteemed academics during a Wednesday lunchtime (normally at 1:15, check the posters) to debate and ponder modern (and ancient) literary conundra. But mainly just to eat pain au chocs.
If, like the renowned modern poet Big Shaq, ‘Man did English language, man got E, for excellent’ then feel free to come along (even if you didn’t get such a stellar grade or don’t do English at all). Last week, one of the members of the committee gave an insightful talk into his ever-changing view of potential anti-Semitism within The Merchant of Venice. Over the course of the term we hope to be populating the weeks with a number of such talks, as well as guest appearances from renowned authors, poets and actors (names TBA).
Next week we have what promises to be yet another intriguing talk lined up. The title is ‘Are Bestsellers really the Best Books?’, a topic which provokes fierce debate in literary circles. To find out how the seemingly innocuous title of ‘bestseller’ inspires vast Twitter rants, contention amongst publishers, the dissemination of political propaganda and more come to EnglishSoc next Wednesday. All years are most welcome (and there will be large amounts of free food).
Also, as a side note, anyone with a burning passion in the subject (or in need of UCAS points) is more than welcome to give a talk and should get in touch with me (email: StrachO@stpaulsschool.org.uk) or another committee member (Eddie Kembery, Jack Peachey, Robbie Brewer, Alex Haydn-Williams, Ben Fobel, Kit Treadwell and Theo Mahon).
