Book of the Week

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
Recommended by James Wilson

Trevor Noah is now a very successful comedian and has a very popular show on Comedy Central. However, his childhood was much more challenging.

He was born a mixed-race child in South Africa towards the end of Apartheid, and Born a Crime, his autobiography, explores themes such as poverty, racism and belonging in an truly amusing style. However, this does not make the book any less hard-hitting and throughout the book there are many events that will shock and worry the reader.
The book does not shy away from darker themes; domestic violence, racism, crime and poverty are almost just a part of life. It is a real eye-opener and at times is very emotional but this contrast with the more light-hearted sections of the book makes the comedy even more amusing.

As well as discussing deeper themes, the book also focuses on Noah’s experiences as a child and teenager. Girls, friendships and money-making schemes provide much hilarity and comic relief, making the book a rollercoaster of emotions and there are often parts where the reader does not know if they should laugh or cry.

As a summary, this book is a great read and a real insight into South Africa towards the end of, and after, Apartheid.
