Guess Who Came to Dinner: the answers (and the winners ...!)

On the last Tuesday of term, we'll be revealing the answers to the final rounds of the Book Blog quiz, and announcing the winner. Last week, the Kayton Library also held its annual World Book Day quiz, which was as popular as ever.  In today's post, we bring you the answers, and reveal who were the winners of those elusive Nando's Vouchers.

After the excitement buzzing around the table outside the library last week, it is time to reveal who came to dinner with The Kayton Library for World Book Day. 

This year’s clues arranged around the eight table settings certainly sparked some debate and challenged the literary brain-cells of staff and pupils alike. Thank you to all those who got involved and to the Drama Department and Mr Tretiakov for helping to deck out the table with some excellent props.

And so to the answers……..
Guest 1 - Clues: a gun (a prop one obviously!), a tin of beans, a tin of peaches and a can of Coke.

Answer: The Man from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. This should have been easy for those of you currently studying this with Miss McLaren!

Guest 2 - Clue: a severed pig’s head – thanks to the Drama department for this truly gruesome item.

Answer: Piggy from Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Despite it not being known for including the severing of a pig’s head a lot of you came to a very quick (but inaccurate) conclusion that this was Animal Farm!

Guest 3 - Clues: a bridal veil, a clock stopped at 08:40, cobwebs and a lace glove.

Answer: Miss Havisham from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

Guest 4 - Clues: knitting, a pair of gardening gloves, a torch and a string of pearls

Answer: Miss Marple from Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced.

Most people worked out that it was a Miss Marple but were stuck as to which one. The torch and pearls were the hints for the book title on this one.

Guest 5 - Clues: a honey pot and a blue balloon

Answer: Winnie the Pooh from The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne.

The balloon colour is key to getting this one right! In the book Winnie the Pooh, the balloon featured is a red balloon whilst the blue balloon is featured in The House at Pooh Corner when Pooh uses it to float up the 'honey tree' disguised as 'a little black rain cloud'!

Guest 6 - Clues: the pendulum experiment, equations and a toy spaceman

Answer: Ryland Grace from Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary.

The science experiment certainly sparked some debate and prompted a lot of cries of “are you sure these are all fiction books?”. I’m sure Dr Gane will be disappointed not more of you got the book he made you read!

Guest 7 - Clues: a cauldron and sample bottles containing; a small eyeball, a forked tongue and some dark brown fur. (Mrs Pemberton had some fun crafting these tiny specimens!)

Answer: The Weird Sisters from Macbeth by William Shakespeare.

Guest 8 - Clues: a dagger, a New York Yankees cap, a book about architecture and a book about Athena.

Answer: Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This one challenged some memory banks but was rewarded with discussions of how much you 'loved those books'.

Now the bit you’ve all being waiting for…….the winners!

Thanks to everyone who took part this year: it was great to see so many conversations being sparked from the display. Disappointingly, no one got everything correct but we had some excellent entries most notably from the Upper Eighth and Fourth form. To honour the quality of the work, particularly by the lower school, we have decided to award two prizes with both winners receiving a Nando’s voucher for £20.

Winner 1: Adam Seydo

Well done to Adam who narrowly beat off fierce competition from fellow Upper Eighths. We must give a special mention to Fred Websper, Max Swinnerton and Theo Frankel who narrowly missed out on the prize.

Winner 2: Lucas Bejko & Max Magalhes (joint entry)

Congratulations to Lucas and Max for not only an excellent entry but also a well thought out and comprehensive tie-breaker.

Huge thanks to the librarians, not just for this fantastic quiz, but also for introducing Bookflix throughout the school which has sparked lots of interest, conversations and debates and has helped provide us with relevant and engaging recommendations and ideas of what to read.
